MONKS TROD

Positive progress on conserving the environment and realising the benefits of inclusive access

Powys County Council is to spend £300,000 upgrading sections of the green road known as Monks Trod, that passes over part of the Cambrian Mountains above Rhayader. The monies will come from a government grant of £17.7m made to the Council through the levelling up fund.

Monks Trod has been subject to a series of traffic regulation orders, the latest of which, that is still in force, extended a restriction on four-wheeled vehicles to two- and three-wheeled vehicles. The ban served only to deter responsible use, while illegal motoring and motorcycling continued. The ban also delayed progress on the maintenance required to ensure all forms of public traffic could pass on the road.

The proposed works will create a surface that will be suitable for all, including cyclists, horse riders and walkers. A spokesman for the council reporting, “The surface proposed is compatible with protecting the features of the landscape. This will not be a sealed (tarmac) surface, it will simply be a drier causeway across the wettest areas, with stone where that is needed to create a more durable surface.”

Graeme Collins, CEO of the TRF said, “We applaud Powys County Council on this positive action, and we look forward to providing additional support for the route. The resurfacing of sections will create a multiuser trail that can be responsibly shared and enjoyed by all. We encourage riders and all users to stick to designated routes and stop the damage caused by seeking alternative routes where the Trod has been previously impassable. The resurfacing will better protect the surrounding landscape, while allowing proper public access for all.”
